Health Alert: Binge Drinking Intensity on the Rise. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that while the frequency of binge drinking in United States fell over the past decade, the number of drinks consumed during a binge has increased by 12%. Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency medicine physician at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City warns, “Binge drinking is exceedingly dangerous due to the elevated risk of respiratory depression, aspiration, and a drop in blood pressure that may place people at higher risk of death.” Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, January 2020 Diet: Pickled Foods May Be Bad for Some Kidneys. Among a group of 2,797 type 2 diabetics, researchers observed that those with greater amounts of pickled foods in their diet were more likely to experience reduced renal function over the course of two years. BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, January 2020 Exercise: Exercise Also Helps with Late-Life Depression. Depression can have a serious effect on the health and wellbeing of seniors. A recent literature review found that engaging in an exercise program can reduce depressive symptoms in the elderly. Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, January 2020 Chiropractic: Chronic Neck Pain, Pillows, and Chiropractic Care. Past research has demonstrated that poor sleeping posture can lead to cervical pain and discomfort, especially in the morning. A new study involving 30 chronic neck pain patients under chiropractic treatment found that those who used a pillow designed to support the neck during sleep experienced even greater improvements with respect to their neck pain and disability. Health SA, October 2019 Mental Attitude: Internet Use Affects Study Skills in University Students. Questionnaires completed by 285 college students revealed that those who spend excessive amounts of time on the Internet have less motivation to study than students without problematic Internet usage behavior. Journal of Computer Assisted Learning, December 2019 Wellness/Prevention: Lose Belly Fat to Avoid a Second Heart Attack. New research involving over 22,000 Swedish adults who had suffered a first heart attack found that those with less abdominal obesity had a lower risk for subsequent cardiovascular issues, such as a stroke or a second heart attack.
